The Scalpel-Free Facelift!
Looking Years Younger - With Cosmetic Dentistry
January 18, 2002- (Atlanta, GA) - In the past, plastic surgery has been a popular method of reversing the signs of aging but radical surgery is both painful and time consuming. The other alternatives, such as Botox and Collagen injections to plump up skin or relax facial muscles are costly and temporary. In 2002, cosmetic dentistry is making its way to the forefront as a non-invasive, practical alternative to what plastic surgeons have offered for years: self-esteem and beauty, but without the weeks and months of recuperation. Dr. Debra Gray King, one of the pioneers of the scalpel-free facelift, offers her patients a new option to help achieve a more youthful appearance by diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, plumping up lips, and perfecting smiles thus making patients look years younger safely and efficiently without surgery.
Imagine lifting years off your face in just a week. Dr. Debra Gray King, president of the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, says that when it comes to reducing the signs of aging, esthetic dentistry should be a top consideration. "As you get older the lower portion of your face inevitably begins to shrink," said Dr. King. "With cosmetic dentistry, we are able to drastically reduce wrinkles and return an individual's face to a more youthful state through manipulation of tooth width and size." And, there are other health benefits. As teeth wear down over the years, the jaw can be prevented from closing correctly, causing pain. Cosmetic dentistry can improve functionality and eliminate discomfort. "The best part," added Dr. King, "is that there's immediate gratification and no extended recovery period. We can change someone's smile and image in just one visit, and their friends often can't identify what the change is. They just know that our clients look years younger."
Dr. King's designs are all individual to each patient based on a number of factors that impact the outcome of the smile. The shape of the patient's face will affect the chosen shape of the teeth. For example, if a patient has a round face, Dr. King creates long, square-shaped teeth that will ultimately have a slimming affect on the patient's face. If a patient is concerned about laugh lines, Dr. King can use the technique of "Veneer Enlargement" to decrease these wrinkles. She builds-out the veneer and, as a result, the facial area above the veneer is pushed out, thereby smoothing upper lip wrinkles while causing lips to appear more full and pouty. Also, longer teeth are synonymous with youth. Older teeth are shorter because of years of wear and tear. For a more youthful appearance, veneers are made longer creating the appearance of younger teeth. The mouth appears fuller with longer teeth as they actually push out the lower lip, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Another indication of age are "Buckle corners", these are the dark, negative space seen in the back corners of the mouth when a person smiles. To correct this, Dr. King widens the width of the back teeth with veneers. This broadens the smile and imparts it with more whiteness eliminating buckle corners. Finally, teeth stain with age, and a dingy smile can add years to ones face. The color of the teeth corresponds with the age of the patient - the younger the whiter. Skin tones can also influence the shade selection of the veneers. Therefore, by placing a natural-looking, whiter veneer over discolored teeth brightens the face and creates a more youthful appearance.
"Our patients often tell us that their lives have changed because of their new smiles. Their increased confidence has been a catalyst to many other life altering changes such as career advancement, a greater interest in fitness and health, and a stronger desire to continue improving their lives," said Dr. King. "Most importantly their new smiles make them aware of the fact that it's not too late to bring out their true beauty."
