A Relaxing Day…At the Dentist?
Dental Spa provides new atmosphere to clean teeth
(January 17, 2002 - Atlanta, Georgia) - Mention a trip to the dentist, and most people cringe at the thought. The shrill whine of the drill and an antiseptic smell don't always create visions of total relaxation. But the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry (ACCD) is changing all that. Through a combination of high tech and high touch, ACCD has created a Dental Spa, a new approach for appearance-related dental care.
To ease anxieties of clients, ACCD offers a soothing, peaceful atmosphere. Unlike the typical sterile feel and smell of most dental offices, ACCD is modeled after a fine, upscale resort. The reception area is accented with comfortable furnishings, flowers, oil paintings, and a refreshment center with coffee, tea, bottled water, juice and cookies fresh-baked on site. Scented aromatherapy candles burn in various corners of many rooms. Instead of nurses in scrubs, cheerful dental concierges, dressed in designer outfits, greet clients by name.
"We live in a hurried, stressful environment," said Dr. Debra Gray King, ACCD president. "We feel there is no reason why having a dental procedure shouldn't be a positive, welcoming experience."
In the treatment areas, cosmetic dental procedures are performed with clients in massaging recliners, with a complete spectrum of relaxing comforts offered: warm neck pillows, cozy blankets, foot massage boots, headphones to listen to soothing background music. Clients can have their teeth cleaned while receiving a paraffin wax treatment, complete with heated mittens, or escape into a movie during treatment, via DVD players and wide screen virtual reality glasses.
New digital x-ray equipment, which requires no development time and has 90% less radiation, has reduced the long ritual of obtaining dental x-rays. Evil-looking syringes are a relic of the past at ACCD. They've been replaced with computer-controlled anesthetic delivery systems, which many clients report is virtually pain-free. The high-pitched drill of your parents' dentist has
been replaced by a softer, electric hand piece. Intra-oral cameras allow clients to see what the dentist sees on a ceiling mounted TV. In addition to the full range of cosmetic dental treatments, the Center also has accelerated in-office teeth whitening available. With this system, the average client's teeth can be whitened eight shades in about an hour.
"Our goal," added Dr. King, "is to create a comfortable and enjoyable experience. We want our patients to look good and feel good when they leave our office."
About Dr. Debra Gray King: Since 1987, Dr. King has demonstrated excellence in the art and science of designing beautiful smiles. Dr. King is a graduate of the College of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee at Memphis and the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advance Dental Studies. Dr. King is also a clinical instructor at the University of the Pacific Continuum on Aesthetic Dentistry in San Francisco. Presently she is the only dentist in Georgia, and one of only 31 dentists internationally, to achieve Accreditation and Fellowship status with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry -- the leading professional organization in the world for cosmetic dentistry. Dr. King is married to former King & Spalding attorney Dan King, who is Chief Operating Officer of the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry. They reside in Atlanta with their three young children.
