America’s Smiles Are Drying Up
Dentists Offer Solution for Symptoms Such as Bad Breath
(ATLANTA, GA) Across the nation, people are experiencing dry mouth caused by over 400 commonly used medications such as Lipitor, Zoloft, Prilosec, Paxil and Detrol, and anti-anxiety medications, such as Atarax, Valium, or Xanax just to name a few. In addition, people with diabetes and cancer (having undergone chemical and radiation treatments) also experience recurring dry mouth. Reductions in the quantity and quality of the saliva can result in bad breath, loss of taste, inability to swallow food easily and oral discomfort.
Ronald Feinman, D.M.D. and his colleagues at the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry have been noted that dry mouth syndrome can also result in bacterial destruction of oral tissues, a bad odor, dental pain, and in some cases rampant cavities and/or gum disease in the mouth. Soft tissue lesions and increased decay on natural teeth and around restorative work in the mouth, such as crowns or porcelain veneers, can add to this discomfort.
Dr. Feinman has found that using wetting agents with enzymes such as Biotine, special mouthwash and toothpaste to allow their clients more normal tissue hydration and ease the discomforts of dry mouth.
“Having a decreased flow of saliva can have some serious consequences, however once diagnosed there are a number of ways to help control it,” says Dr. Feinman.
