We will also let you know your treatment options. There are several reasons you shouldn’t delay seeking professional treatment for your tooth.
Why See an Emergency Dentist?
If you have a toothache, it’s usually a symptom of an infection. If you don’t see an emergency dentist and decide to leave the infection untreated, it will continue to progress. Your gums, other teeth, and jawbone can also become infected. In serious cases the infection can travel into your bloodstream. Over-the-counter medication might relieve some of the pain, but the cause of the pain will persist.
An infected tooth requires a root canal treatment. When the pulp, or living tissue inside your tooth, is infected, antibodies travel to the site to fight the infection. But there is not enough room in the tooth cavity for the antibodies. Inflammation occurs and the tooth pulp eventually chokes and dies. The infection still needs to be removed using root canal treatment. The pulp will be cleaned out and replaced with a dental filler material. The tooth will be sealed and further protected with a dental crown.
Lost or Damaged Crowns and Fillings
If you lose or damage a dental crown or filling, it needs to be replaced. Crowns and fillings protect teeth. If a tooth is exposed or only partially protected, it can further weaken and even break. The tooth can be completely lost and need to be replaced. Tooth replacement is much more costly and time-consuming than seeing an emergency dentist and having the crown or filling replaced.
Trauma can cause a tooth to crack or completely break. Untreated cracks can worsen from the stress of biting and chewing, and require extensive dental restoration. Sometimes trauma only causes internal damage to a tooth. If you have experienced an impact to a tooth, call us right away to have it examined. Early treatment by an emergency dentist can help limit the extent of restorative dental care needed and prevent an increase in pain.
Do Dental Appointments Make You Nervous?
